People often ask me what is the best preparation for a facelift. Here’s my advice:

Keep a good healthy diet beforehand with lots of fruit and vegetables. If you normally take supplements, please keep those going but avoid herbal remedies that might thin the blood such as arnica. There isn’t anything specifically in terms of supplements that you need to take before the surgery that can otherwise optimise your outcome.

I suggest keeping up exercise and aiming to be as fit as possible leading into the operation day. After the surgery you’ll need to take it easy on the exercise so bear that in mind.

In the weeks before surgery, if you have any skin lesions that would be worrying you, it’s best to get those sorted out beforehand. Some people use skin preparations like alphahydroxy acid and you can continue that up till the day of surgery, but I suggest stopping it for about 4 to 6 weeks after the surgery. Keep going with daily face wash and sun protection until the surgery.  Gentle face washing after the surgery is ok and after two weeks you should be back to normal washing and sun cream.

On the day of surgery, it’s best not to wear any make-up.

For Botox and fillers the recommendation is not have any fillers for 18 months prior to surgery that said of operated on a number of people and whom I’ve found filler remaining in their face as sometimes it can stick around longer than expected for that reason I don’t tend to worry too much about that. Botox is usually worn off after about three months but if you have had some Botox within a couple of months prior to surgery, it doesn’t worry me too much.

You will be nervous before the surgery and often people don’t sleep very well the night before. The best thing to do is to try and be as relaxed as possible. Know that you’ve made a good decision that you’re heading in for the facelift and that it’s going to be really exciting to see the result afterwards. I think around the time of surgery it’s important to try and relieve as much work stress as you can and just choose the time in life where you know you’ve got a good recovery plan in place.
